I believe that birth is a normal physiological event, not a medical crisis. But instead of the natural event that it is, pregnancy is often regarded as an illness, and birth, a surgical procedure. I believe that giving birth is something women instinctively know how to do, we just don’t know that we know. Our fears, memories, perceptions, imaginations, and others’ horror stories, have “erased” our memories of how to birth. Having a doula to guide you through the birth process can result in an amazing, empowering experience.
I believe that drugs can be very helpful in getting a woman through an unusually long or difficult birth, but that drugs are generally overused in our birthing society. I have assisted women through natural, non-medicated labors, (at homes, birth centers and hospitals) as well as medicated labors, inductions, and elective cesareans.
I assist women who choose to give birth at hospitals, birth centers, and at home births. I personally prefer to give birth in the comfort of my own home, but I understand that many women do not. I believe that women should labor and birth where they are most comfortable. Because I work for you, not a hospital, birth center, OB or Midwife, I go where you go! I often meet moms at their homes to help them comfortably labor there until they are ready to go to their place of birth. I can also meet at your place of birth. I love to work in out-of-hospital settings for births and offer a significant discount to my couples who choose that option.
Know that it is never too late to change providers or birth settings if you determine that your preferences at the beginning of your pregnancy don’t reflect your preferences 9 months later! It is not unheard of for women to change care providers in their 40th week. I am prepared with referrals of area providers and birth locations that may meet your needs should you decide to change your mind regarding these issues during the course of your pregnancy.
This is your body, your birth, and your baby. You, and the decisions made by you and your partner, are ultimately responsible for your birth outcome and your baby’s wellbeing. I strive to provide resources and facilitate an environment for my clients to learn, grow, explore and research how, where, and with whom they will choose to give birth. I hope to help my clients find the tools to enable them to have the birth experience they desire.
